Minangkabau Ethnicity Dog's Life in Film

By Sahrul N

Documentary Film: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)I've gotten a few inquiries from people outside the Minangkabau ethnic group, such as, "Why do people like to hunt pigs Minang?", "Why Minang people like dogs, but that Minang people of Islam?", "Why pigs should be killed, even though he only lives in the forest? ", and other similar questions with it. At that time I answer it with logic-logic improvise which of course will not satisfy the asker.

Then came the independent film titled A Dog's Life by Zainal "Jay Abi" Abidin, STSI Padangpanjang production which tells of human life (a family) that hunting pigs in Minangkabau. The film which Adi Krishna as his director of photograpy-II is winner of Indonesian Independent Film Festival II (FFII II) in 2003 which was held this SCTV, ironically shows how a pig is more dear peburu dog purchased at a price of millions of rupiah compared with children and his own wife.

From this film, a friend who used to ask probably will add a new question is "Why do people that he is Muslim Minang more affection to the dog than the expensive and illegitimate children and his wife are kosher?" Answer a new question even this perhaps I should come back looking for logic-logic potluck is very doubtful by the friend.

Life of A Dog's Life depicted the Minang people may not be a problem, because the tradition of hunting pigs that have been there has always be so. Hunting habits is an effort to safeguard the agricultural and plantation areas of disturbance vermin. Hunting for the Minang people, as well as ethnic traditions by hunting other animals such as in Africa, America and others. But how that is done will differ in each ethnic group.

A New History of Documentary FilmSo the process of hunting is the process of acculturation (acculturation), where the influence of foreign culture and dintergrasi accommodated without destroying the personality. Acculturation occurs when there are common interests in this common effort to eliminate interference in animals against the farmer plants. Empowerment of the dog as an animal that could kill the pig and told to drive is also the influence of another world. Dogs become the universal symbol of the submissive animals to humans.

Hunting in Minangkabau culture has become a culture that is difficult (difficult) to change or collectively, the covert culture. Changes in economic sectors which used to be dominated by agricultural businesses did little to change the pattern of pig hunting in Minangkabau. If the first orientation is clearly to kill or banish vermin such as pigs, but now it has changed the orientation of a kind of hobby that should be distributed. The desire to show the greatness of human individuals and their dogs is very prominent. This can be seen and heard in coffee shops where paburu very excited to tell the success of his livestock in an attempt to kill a pig.

As a result the price of livestock (dogs) are great to be high, even up to tens of millions. Of course this kind of competition have to sacrifice another life is family. Child eating enough with potluck side dishes, while the dogs eat better nutrition, if necessary, given the stamina energy drinks to stay awake. A Dog's Life to Minangkabau society of ethnic identity in life.
